UV light treatment helps skin diseases

CEDAR RAPIDS - That extra hour of sunshine is here. Studies show it's great for your mood. But UV light can also help treat certain skin diseases. To the untrained eye, Christy Kolder looks like she's trying to get a tan. But actually, she's clearing up a skin disease that's plagued her since elementary school."It's not fun, it can be a little intimidating to wear short sleeve shirts or even shorts because even if you get used to them, you can be a little self conscious because people can see it. It's very noticeable," said Kolder. It is psoriasis, red lesions like these that covered her elbows, knees and shins. Psoriasis occurs when skin cells multiply too fast. When medication didn't work Christy tried UV light therapy at Mercy Care North. In just a few treatments, her skin started to look normal again."The UV light slows down that process, changes the cells functions and reduces that process and takes the lesion away," said David Neira, a physical therapist at Mercy. Most patients get treatment about two to three times a week and typically spend no more than five minutes in the booth.
