When you become pregnant, your body goes through a whirlwind of changes. And many of those changes show themselves best through your skin. So taking extra good care of your skin during pregnancy becomes very important.
Most women know though, that there are things they either should or should not put into their bodies when they're carrying an unborn baby. Many don't know however, that you also have to be very careful with what you put on your skin during pregnancy too. Many beauty and skin care products contain ingredients that can be absorbed through your skin into the blood stream, and these might be harmful to your baby.
Due to massive hormonal changes that take place when you're pregnant, a lot of various skin conditions can crop up. It's not uncommon for instance, to have acne problems during the first few months of your pregnancy. Some women also have problems with their faces being much oilier than normal, and the collection of dust and dirt into the pores will make the blackheads and acne problems worse.
So keeping your face clean during this time of your pregnancy is very important, but you may need to change the type offacial cleanser you use. You'll need to use something gentle on your face, because your skin is more sensitive when you're pregnant. You'll also want to avoid standard acne medications which have large amounts of salicylic acid in them. It's advisable to avoid anything with more than 2% salicylic acid in it, and only use that weaker dosage sparingly. You may to simply try using a good quality gentle facial cleanser and avoid the acne products all together while you're pregnant though, just to be on the safe side.
Dry, itchy skin is another common problem that happens during pregnancy. Even if your skin gets oily and breaks out in acne early in your pregnancy, it could do a complete reversal in the later months. So using a good quality moisturizing body lotion is advisable for either condition, because this can help your skin to balance it's own natural oils a bit better. Use a stretch mark cream to keep your skin moist and healthy enough to stretch with your growing baby.
Be careful not to use any facial moisturizers which have heavy fragrances and alcohol content too, because these can be absorbed by your skin plus they can become an irritant to your skin when it's sensitive.
Getting out in the sun and enjoying warm weather days is advisable while you're pregnant, because it can really help you to unwind, destress, and just generally lift your mood. Sunscreen is an absolute must though. Put some on every two hours while you're in the sun. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids so you don't risk dehydration, and wear a broad brimmed hat to help protect your head and face from too much direct sunlight.
Many women get a condition known as "the mask of pregnancy" when they're pregnant. This condition causes certain areas of your face to become much darker and splotchy, and sometimes those skin areas wrinkle and fall off regularly. This condition will be enhanced by the sun, particularly if you have a darker complexion. Using good quality sunscreen or facial moisturizer with SPF of 15 or higher will help you minimize this condition.
Don't forget the two all natural ingredients vital to your health and the health of your skin while you're pregnant: Water and Sleep. Get plenty of water so you don't become dehydrated, and this with help your baby and your skin stay healthy at the same time. Getting plenty of sleep also gives your skin the time it needs to rest and rejuvenate.
