Mother's Day 2007 happens to fall on Sunday May 13, 2007. Last Year mothers day holiday fell on Sunday May 14, 2006.
Mother's Day is a holiday honoring mothers, it is celebrated on different days in different places around the world. Mothers frequently get gifts on Mother's day.
Different countries celebrate Mother's Day on various days of the year. Some claim this day emerged from the custom of mother-worship in ancient Greece. Mother worship - kept a festival to Cybele, the wife of Cronus. It was held about the time of the Vernal Equinox around Asia Minor and ultimately in Rome from the Ides of March. The Romans had another holiday called Matronalia that was dedicated to the god Juno, though moms were typically given gifts on this day.
In the USA, Mother's Day was copied from the UK by a social activist named Julia Ward Howe. After the Civil War she wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation. In England and the UK, the day now celebrates motherhood and giving thanks to mothers. Mother's Day is the most popular day to dine out at a restaurant in the US.
In most countries, Mother's Day is a new holiday copied from western civilization. In several African countries there are festivals and events celebrating mothers.
In most of Asia, Mother's Day is a heavily commercialized concept copied straight from Mother's Day in the USA.
Mother's Day is a day for celebrating motherhood and thanking our moms. In the US, it is the second Sunday in May. Mothers often get gifts on this day.
A US Tradition calls for wearing of roses or carnations on Mother's Day - a red one if one's mother is alive, white if she has died, and pink if one is not certain.
Mother's Day in the US was proclaimed in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation, and Howe called for it to be observed each year in 1872.
As originally envisioned, "Howe's Mother's Day" was a plea for pacifism and disarmament by women.
This is the original Mother's Day Proclamation:
Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have breasts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."
From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God -
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.
Early "Mother's Days" were mostly observed by women's peace associations. A common event was meetings of groups of moms of soldiers from opposite sides of the Civil War.
The first recorded observance of "Mother's Day" in the U.S. was in Albion, Michigan, on May 13, 1877, on the second Sunday of the month.
On February 4, 1904 a South Bend, Indiana man, Frank Hering made the first Public appeal and started his campaign for a national observance of "Mother's Day" in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In 1907, Mother's Day was celebrated by Anna Jarvis in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate her mother's appreciation. Two years earlier she had died on May 9, 1905. Jarvis's mother was Ann Jarvis. She had been active in Mother's Day campaigns for peace and worker's safety and health since end of the Civil War. The daughter Jarvis launched a pursuit to get wider recognition of Mother's Day. The Jarvis celebration on May 10, 1908 involved 407 children with their moms at the Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton. This church is the International Mother's Day Shrine. Grafton is the recognized as the birthplace of Mother's Day.
A later campaign to recognize Mother's Day was spearheaded by John Wanamaker, a clothing merchant . As the holiday of Mother's Day grew, the significance shifted from the pacifism and reform movements to the appreciation of mothers. The first official recognition was in West Virginia in 1910. A proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day was signed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 1914.
The second Sunday of May will fall on the following dates over the next few years:
* 2007 - May 13
* 2008 - May 11
* 2009 - May 10
* 2010 - May 9
* 2011 - May 8
A gift or present is customary for mother's day. Pick a great gift idea. Gifts can be anything that makes your mother more happy or less sad, especially as a favor, including forgiveness and kindness (even if your mother has not been kind to you).
When giving your mother a gift, be sure to package it nicely. For example, in the West, gifts are often wrapped in wrapping paper and accompanied by a gift card. In Chinese culture, red wrapping connotes luck.
Happy mom's Day for Kids, Family and Teachers!
